A metal enclosure manufacturer was shipping their enclosures on wooden pallets and was secured to the pallets using metal banding. The enclosures were becoming damaged during shipping when bumped from the side and by friction from the metal bands. Their goal was to reduce both enclosure damage and costs. They envisioned using a re-useable plastic pallet, but needed to secure the enclosure to the pallet without sustaining any damage. Their key design criteria for a captive fastener were:
- It must be hand operated.
- It must be captive to the pallet, retract safely when not in use and sustain no damage during handling and shipping.
- It must pass D.O.T. vibration testing for truck shipping.

After several months of unsuccessful development with another supplier, the customer sought Matdan for a new perspective. The competitive designs did not meet the minimal cost criteria and functioned poorly. Within one week, Matdan designed a superior product including prototypes that met all objectives and even helped reduce the targeted assembly time.
